Health Benefits of Masoor dal (Lentils)

Lentils are extremely rich in soluble fiber, which forms a gel-like substance in the digestive tract, thereby helping in removing bile from the body. It further helps in eliminating and reducing blood cholesterol levels.

The higher fiber content of lentils helps in increasing the size of stool; hence, speeding the journey of waste products through the gut. In short, lentils are useful for alleviating constipation. The fiber content also reduces the risk and the symptoms of diverticulosis, a condition in which small pouches form in the colon wall.

The soluble fiber in lentils has the property of trapping carbohydrates. It slows down the digestion and absorption process, hence preventing major changes in blood sugar level throughout the day. This helps diabetic patients.

The insoluble fiber in lentils leads to the feeling of early satiation; hence, people eat less and gain fewer pounds. Besides, insoluble fiber is indigestible, which passes through the body adding just a few calories.

Lentils are rich in flavones, a class of antioxidants with antioxidant properties. Studies have proved that regular consumption of lentils can reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Lentils prove to be significant for a healthy heart as they prevent heart coronary problems. Fiber in the lentils reduces blood cholesterol levels and plaque forming on the walls of the arteries, thereby eliminating the risk of stroke or other cardiovascular diseases.

Apart from providing low burning complex carbohydrates, lentils increase energy levels by replenishing iron stores. This is particularly very important for menstruating women, who are at a higher risk of iron deficiency.

Besides fiber which contributes to the health of the cardiovascular system, lentils contain folic acid and magnesium, significant for reducing the level of homocysteine, a compound known to be dangerous for the heart and artery walls. Also, lentils promote better blood flow and passage of oxygen and nutrients to the organs.

Rich in the antioxidant, molybdenum, lentils assist the body in breaking down harmful substances hence reducing allergy symptoms. This antioxidant is also essential for preventing impotency, particularly in older men, and avoiding anemia.

Researches indicate that the vitamin E found in lentils helps prevent the risk of Parkinson’s disease, though the exact connection is not yet determined.

How To Make Turkey Stuffing

Turkey Stuffing Recipe

Ingredients:

The below recipe is a only a guideline for making your turkey stuffing. Depending on your family's taste, add or delete ingredients (onions, celery, mushrooms, and or nuts) to make to your liking. Be creative!

1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 large onion, chopped
2 cups chopped celery
1 pound fresh mushrooms, sliced
1 loaf day-old bread, toasted and cut into 3/4-inch cubes (about 10-12 cups)
1 egg, beaten
Stock from the turkey giblets and/or chicken broth (approximately 1 to 2 cups)
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
Salt and freshly-ground pepper to taste
Dried crushed sage to taste
Dried crushed thyme to taste

Preparation:

To make turkey giblet stock, place the turkey giblets (giblets and neck), water, and salt in a small saucepan over low heat; bring to a simmer and simmer for about 1 hour, uncovered. Remove from heat and strain the stock into a container for use with the stuffing. Alternatively, you can use chicken stock or just plain water with this recipe.

In a large pot (large enough to hold all the prepared stuffing) over medium-high heat, melt butter or margarine. Add onion, celery and mushrooms; sauté until soft.

Mix in bread cubes and egg with enough chicken broth to moisten. Add nuts, salt, pepper, sage, and thyme; stir until well blended. The stuffing should be moist, not dry, because heat destroys bacteria more rapidly in a moist environment.

Proceed to stuff turkey in your usual way. NOTE: Do not cool the stuffing. Spoon it directly into the turkey cavity right after preparation. Stuff the turkey loosely — about 3/4 cup of stuffing per pound. Check out Advice on Stuffing a Turkey Safely.

Immediately place the stuffed, raw turkey in an oven set no lower than 325 degrees F. To cook your stuffed turkey, check out Guidelines For Roasting a Whole Turkey.

The USDA has come up with a one-temperature-suits-all for poultry safety: 165 degrees F. For safety and well done turkey, the internal temperature should be checked with a meat thermometer

Makes enough to stuff a 20-pound turkey

Going Raw

Going raw is my motto these days and I have no idea what benefit to get from this raw  fruit and vegetable combination as it is just an experiment on my part. Normally, I blend whatever is in my fridge to enjoy the goodness of fresh food at least once or twice a week, devoid of cooking. It is not a substitute of a meal but it does make me feel full when taking a glassful of blended fruits and vegetables. Therefore, a glass of blended vegetable and fruits would be helpful in eating less and easy for the stomach, yet nutrients aren't compromised.

Also, I always opt for natural sugars found in each fruit and never add any sugar on any blends I made as sugar is no longer a regular item in my house. Honey would be a good substitute or maple syrup to sweeten up any beverages as these are natural.  I blend at my own risks aiming for natural food and have no regrets. There are some changes in my body, in my skin and in my thoughts, positive changes I mean. No regrets so far, only happiness to learn more about the goodness of fresh food.

Next thing I want to get rid of are the flour food. Those yummy sweets calling me, tempting my sweet tooth, begging for more each time desserts sweep my tongue. Those colorful designs that captures my mind as well as my taste. I know it is not a healthy choice but my will power always end up melting from desires of them and I hope to conquer them one day. One day at a time.

With this in mind, I am sure my health will be better as medicines are also a no no to me, unless it is an emergency. There are ways to better our health problems by using natural remedies. These are not expensive. In fact, some are available right in our very own home. We can find them in our kitchen, in our garden and in the neighborhood. Herbal remedies are not fast relief like the magic of one pill. Home remedies work in a very gentle way, slow but surely. Our body heals well if we help it with natural remedies. Our body heals itself if given the time and help by listening to our own body.

One last thing for me to remember is this : TOO MUCH IS NOT GOOD. A balance diet is best for a healthy life and my first step starts NOW with exercise to awake my self to the beauty of life.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR TEETH 'SNOW WHITE'

It is becoming a craze to smile with white teeth and yellowish teeth are out. Look around you and see a lot of people are showing that perfect smile with a perfectly white teeth. It does look good when smiling and showing white teeth, like one is so healthy perfect. Are you ready to be one of them?  Try this and see it yourself---

HOW TO MAKE YOUR TEETH 'SNOW WHITE'

Put a tiny bit of toothpaste into a small cup, mix in one teaspoon baking soda plus one
Teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide, half teaspoon water and thoroughly mix. Then brush your teeth for two minutes. Remember to do it once a week until you have reached the results you want. Once your teeth are good and white, limit yourself to using the whitening treatment once every month or two.

Someone posted this online and must be enjoying snow white teeth. However, some people are cautious and want to know if it is poisonous or dangerous to health. And that is a good question to ask and I would be too. But who really knows the answer?  One thing to remember is never shallow any of the mix, just for safety measures. And nobody can really tell how long it will take to reach one’s goal of whitening teeth because each set of teeth has gone through different stages of staining.

According to the one who posted this recipe, there is also a possibility that teeth might become sensitive over time but will be whiter! You weigh the pros and cons before doing this as we all are different from each other. Sometimes, it may work with some but would not for others. I personally confirm that after using the baking soda and peroxide mix for a year, my teeth stains were gone but still do not look real white. Sometimes, I uses plain baking soda and water to brush teeth, cautious it might be abrasive if use in a long time.

One dentist warns that hydrogen peroxide used on a daily basis will kill both the good and bad bacteria in your mouth, which can create other problems. The advice is to do it no more than three times a week, and it should be ok.

Ashlie who’s been been whitening teeth for 7 years now is happy with it, saying to never do it in excessive amount to avoid problems. Just be smart and enjoy a whiter smile
As there is a possibility hydrogen peroxide burns your gums at even low % levels in a controlled environment and become sensitive.

Benefits of Cucumber

The Amazing Cucumber
This information was in The New York Times several weeks ago as part of their "Spotlight on the Home" series that highlighted creative and fanciful ways to solve common problems.

1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

2. Feeling tired in the afternoon? Put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber.  Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower?  Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror. It will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds?  Place a few slices in a small pie tin, and your garden will be free of pests all season long.  The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent which is undetectable to humans but drives garden pests crazy and makes them flee the area.

5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool?  Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes. The photo-chemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite.  Works great on wrinkles too!!!

6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache?  Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!

7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and were often used by European trappers, traders and explorers for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes?  Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe; its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

9. Out of WD-40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge?  Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voilà, the squeak is gone!

10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa?  Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water. The chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber will react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown to reduce stress in new mothers and in college students during final exams.

11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don't have gum or mints?  Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath. The phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

12. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel?  Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean. Not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but it won't leave streaks and won't harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean.

13. Using a pen and made a mistake?  Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing. Also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!

Health Benefits of Banana

Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

DEPRESSION:
According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS:
Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

ANEMIA:
High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

BLOOD PRESSURE:
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

BRAIN POWER:
200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

CONSTIPATION:
High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

HANGOVERS:
One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

HEARTBURN:
Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

MORNING SICKNESS:
Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

MOSQUITO BITES:
Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

NERVES:
Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system..

Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

ULCERS:
The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL:
Many other cultures see bananas as a 'cooling' fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has FOUR TIMES the protein, TWICE the carbohydrate, THREE TIMES the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals.. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, 'A BANANA a day keeps the doctor away!'

Immune Boost Tea

The changing season may make us sick as our body takes time to fine-tune itself from different elements like temperature change, pollens, coldness, dust, heat and others. I have not tried using onion but a friend of mine uses onion to ward of her cold or flu. She would cut an onion in half and place one half in a bowl and place the bowl next to her bed as onions are excellent at drawing viruses and bacteria into them. Another suggestion would be boosting our immune system. When we have a cold/flu, our immune system is low and needs a BOOST! This recipe gives a powerful boost to our immune system immediately! FEEL GOOD TODAY.

Ingredients:
1 small piece of ginger chopped into cubes
1 garlic clove diced
1 lemon
1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon of honey
2 cups of water

Action:
1. Bring water to boil and add all the ingredients except the honey.
2. Squeeze the lemon juice into the water and then chop up the rind and add that. Soak for at least 11 minutes.
3. Drain the tea water, add honey and stir and drink when possible!

It’s good for winter and it works!

You can also almost 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil to every cup for an extra boost!

Take Vitamin C to help your colds from getting worse.

These are just a few things you can do to alleviate your cold or flu when it strikes.

HOMEMADE MOSQUITO TRAP:

Have you noticed the Mosquitoes are already out? Here is a homemade trap to help keep you and the kiddos from being a blood donor!!!

HOMEMADE MOSQUITO TRAP:
Items needed:
1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar

1 2-liter bottle

HOW:
1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.

Change the solution every 2 weeks for continuous control.

Baked Radish Cake

In Chinese you call it Loo bo gao or law bok gow  or lo po kao, depending on where the language originated as chinese language do have many different accents. The first two syllables means radish and the last syllable mean cake.  Great for snacks and popular during Chinese new year gathering.

Large daikon radish, peeled -- more or less 2 pounds
Rice flour -- 2 cups
Water -- 1 cup

Ground Meat - a fistful should be enough
Soy sauce -- 2 tablespoon
Salt -- 2 teaspoon
Black pepper -- 1 teaspoon
Garlic Chive - 1 teaspoon, chopped finely
Spring Onions - 1 tablespoon, only the green part and chopped finely
Olive oil -- 5 to 6 tablespoons plus extra

Finely grate the daikon radish into a large bowl. In another bowl, add the rice flour and stir in 1/2 cup of the water until a smooth thick batter forms. Next stir in the grated daikon, add enough of the remaining water to make a pourable batter.

On the stove, heat oil on frying pan and  add the spring onion first. Let it burn a little bit to spread it's aroma then add ground meat to cook for a few minutes, until darkened. Then add soy sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic chive cooking for 2-3 minutes. Add this mixture to the radish batter and mix together.

Grease 8 by 13-inch rectangular cake pan and pour in the batter, smoothing the top with 2 tablespoon olive oil. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

Let it cool down before slicing.

You can keep this is the fridge for a few days for snacking.

The garnish will give taste to the whole radish cake and it smells so good! However, if you feel that taste is not up to your desire, dipping it to soy sauce should make it suffice to your taste buds.
